When I was a little girl I loved to eat at Long John Silvers. Oh, but this wasn’t any ordinary Long John Silvers. No, this one had a huge, ornately decorated treasure chest inside and it was full of tiny treasures for tiny people like me. I can remember it just like it was yesterday…we would go through the line, order our food and there it was! Its mouth was wide open beckoning me to get my prize.
Listen to the words of Jesus as He tells us about His kingdom. “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”
Ok. So the kingdom of heaven is like treasure. It is buried in an open field so that anyone may come to find it. If Jesus is telling us it is like treasure and where the treasure is located, then we have to decide if we really want the treasure. If we do – and of course we do, it’s TREASURE - then we have to break out the old shovel and start digging.
“I love those who love Me, and those who seek me diligently will find Me. Riches and honor are with Me, enduring riches and righteousness. My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold, and my revenue than choice silver…..That I may cause those who love Me to inherit wealth, that I may fill their treasuries.” (Prov. 8:17-19, 21)
So we put our hand to the shovel and start digging. He can see that our heart truly longs find this treasure. Then all of the sudden He causes our shovel to hit the right spot. We have finally found it! He told us the Truth; we believed it and we found it! We open up the chest and He reveals our magnificent find! It is just like He said it was. It is beyond our wildest dreams. Nothing can be compared to it. We consider all that we possess and now count it all rubbish compared to what we’ve found. Oh, it is better than gold, yes, than fine gold. It is EVERYTHING we could ever hope for. It is EVERYTHING we could ever dream of. It is EVERYTHING we could ever want or desire. It is Jesus Christ. He is the greatest treasure in all the earth.
